I have read this book, and I consider it to be a nice orderly presentation of the different facets and stages that the film industry went through during the Golden Age. It presents us with plenty of movie examples to make the point, not just trend-bucking movies that defined or stretched the era, but also plenty of examples of period-piece movies which faithfully cover the essence of the era. This book is split up into several different topics, including but not limited to censorship, genres, stars, and the studio system. This would make a decent Golden Age introductory text for the film student.

Very comprehensive view of the motion picture industry, innovations, practices, technical developments, and relationships betwee labor, stars and businesses. Very interesting to see how much the industry has changed over the years.

There are many other books with lots of information about this period of Hollywood. But the most important thing have this, is that in its first 50 pages gives us a historical tour of the times that we describe in the filmic look. Immediately a quick journey through the golden age and the development and consolidation of the studies, then a description of the development of the technology, followed by the era of censorship and finally, a summary of the different genres. He makes a special description of the film of John Ford's Stagecoach as an example of narrative technique. All very condensed but fairly complete.

Used it for a film history class.Great textbook on the years that Hollywood helped hold the country together. Interesting highlights of those individuals that might not get a mentions elsewhere.

I LOVE the period discussed 1929-1945 in American cinema and am not averse to reading an in-depth analysis of the different elements that went into making this 'The Golden Age of Cinema' but this book is painful to read. It is a 'textbook' in the worst sense of the word. Do not spend the $35. for this book if you are expecting an entertaining account of Hollywood films made during this era. You won't get it. What you will get is an in depth textbook reading of the intricacies of distribution and the history of labor developments. In Hollywood. I'm sorry, I love film as much as anyone but this book is a bore. And maybe someone could explain to me why this book is priced at $35.? It is a small paperback with almost no photographs, nothing to justify the price. Don't bother.

Professor Jewell's book on the "Golden Age" of Hollywood movie-making is a great introduction to the way the Hollywood studios worked in the first 20 years of sound, from 1926 to 1945 (with some nods to the post-war period).What makes the book invaluable is the breadth of his approach. He covers not only what was going on in Hollywood but also in the broader areas of the entertainment arts (radio, stage, books, even sports) competing with movies for consumers' attention and money. He covers not only the spectrum of entertainment arts but also what was going on culturally and even politically in the period. For example, he shows how the rise of censorship in Hollywood movies in 1932-4 related to the economic downturn of the Depression, which had hurt box office returns, seducing the studios into releasing more films featuring sex and violence.In spite of being a manageable 300 pages, the book gets into specifics to prove its points, citing box office grosses and profits for the movies mentioned. In discussing movies by genres and styles, Professor Jewell offers loads of titles of representative and excellent movies to watch and review.Anybody who never got the chance to attend one of Professor Jewell's classes at the USC School of Cinema, where he's one of the top two most popular lecturers, can now make up for it by reading this book and renting some of the movies he mentions. About the Author
Andrew Hunt is an experienced teacher, examiner and author. He has taken a leading role in the Nuffield Chemistry, Twenty First Century Science and Science in Society projects. He taught advanced chemistry course in schools for 20 years and has written a variety of successful chemistry textbooks including an AS and A2 textbook/CD-ROM series. In 1988 I was awarded the Royal Society of Chemistry Award in Chemical Education. I was a founder member and director of the Association for Science Education's SATIS project to promoted the public understanding of science through the school curriculum. This interest continues with the development of a new AS course called 'Science for Public Understanding'. This happened a few days before I left on a cruise that included three ports in Japan, one in Siberia and five in Alaska. I was looking for a very light, relatively inexpensive camera with a fast lens and good telephoto capabilities that I could use if anything went wrong with my more expensive and heavier camera.
However, after shooting more than 300 photos the first day in Tokyo, I found myself using the Stylus 1s nearly all of the time. It was lightweight, versatile and completely reliable.
Unfortunately, I was really disappointed with the Olympus Stylus 1s Instruction Manual. I found myself losing valuable vacation time searching through the manual for the controls and settings I needed. Worse, the manual had neither a detailed table of contents nor an index.
These issues led me to write this book. This book does not replace the manual, but makes it much easier to use. Within this book, you will find suggestions related to the settings you may try and why I am recommending them. These suggestions are based on taking more than 1,600 photos with the Stylus 1s and having it as my constant companion for the past three months. All the photos included in this book were taken by me with the Stylus 1s.

You may have heard that the 20th century was the warmest in 1,000 years, or that the 1990s were the warmest decade in at least 600 years. Perhaps you also know that these claims originated in peer-reviewed science, which produced a temperature graph showing a hockey stick shape.
These claims are, in fact, bogus. It was obvious from the start that they were at least dubious, because when professor Michael Mann stated that his studies showed that "there was no Medieval Warm Period," the fact of a MWP had already been established, beyond dispute, by direct observations made by the French social historian Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie.
Why, then, did Mann's hockey stick persuade so many people? A.W. Montford, an English accountant, does not answer that question - except indirectly, by showing that the people persuaded did not look at it carefully - but he does explain, in detail, why the hockey stick was junk science.

Improbably, the story reads like a murder mystery, a combination of locked room puzzler (how did Mann and his associates get a hockey stick where it could not have existed?) and courtroom drama (as Sherlock Montford presents the forensic deconstruction of the trick).

"The Hockey Stick Illusion" deserves space on the shelf of classic books about science fraud like Peter Medawar's "The Strange Case of the Spotted Mice."
